THEORETICAL INTERIOR DESIGN RETAIL SHOP PROJECT

THEORETICAL INTERIOR PROJECT : RETAIL SHOP
This interior design final project was given for us to redesign a space that gives benefits or attraction to students in the Faculty of Design and Architecture (FRSB). The retail shop is located at the center of the building
and beside Gallery Serdang. There is a courtyard in front of the retail shop and can be accessed by the main lobby or by the secondary foyer. For disabled person they can be accessed also by the main lobby and pass-
through office administration but it does not have a ramp from the secondary foyer to the retail shop.
Café, coffeehouse, and coffee shop are terms for an establishment that primarily serves coffee and other hot beverages. As the name suggests, coffee retail focuses on providing coffee and tea in addition to light
snacks or pastries. Coffee retail was established in Italy in 1645 and then spread into England and abroad. Coffee retail has become a necessity and habit in modern society. It is frequented by a diverse crowd ranging
from professionals and executives to adolescents. Not only serves coffee on its menu but also an atmosphere that makes people feel comfortable.
The proposed site is given beside Gallery Serdang in FRSB UPM with 62 msq. We proposed café retail that suits the location of the site inside the faculty. The reason why we choose a café is that there are no
restaurants or mini-market that supply a portion of proper food and beverages. This opens an opportunity for us to come up with this idea. Moreover, our targeted customers are students FRSB, staff, and lecturers for
them to take a break or mingle around in our café retail to fill up their time. Based on our idea, the perfect choice is He & She Coffee franchise. He & She Coffee runs the business of fostering a sustainable economy
ecosystem for the in-campus community. A university campus basically has its own campus society and through a lifestyle business concept, He & She Coffee helps to build strong students’ backgrounds and personalities.
Besides, He & She wants to give back to the community through the customers themselves. This concludes that proposing He & She Coffee is the best charm to liven inside our faculty as it increases opportunity in terms
of economics and social environment.
As mentioned above, there is one He & She Coffee Sdn Bhd in the main UPM campus. So, we bring it near to our faculty as not all targeted customers can reach the main campus just for a cup of coffee and a
plate of pastries to take in a short period of time. For example, a 15 minutes break between classes would be a burden for the students to go to the main campus just to grab a cup of beverages and light food. Instead, we
proposed the café itself in our own faculty. So we lessen the time consumed by the students, staff and lecturers and all parties will be satisfied.
In conclusion, redesigning the retail shop as a café is the best-proposed concept as it gives advantages and contributes positive sides to the consumers. A useful and inviting college café is a factor in the success
of community college students. A major retention strategy is to create multiple areas for students to stay on campus and utilize the support services available. Café is also noted in several academic studies as one of the
strongest retention strategies for students at community colleges. Hence, providing a good place that gives benefits and comfort to the students, staff and lecturers is our priori
